The Basilica of San Domenico is one of the most important churches in Siena and is located between the piazza of San Domenico and Via della Sapienza. Built in the 13th century, it was enlarged in the following century. It contains the head-relic of St. Catherine of Siena, within a splendid Renaissance chapel built for the occasion. You will make a leap in the place where the highest masters of the first Italian Renaissance met. Among the masterpieces belonging to the patrimony of the Opera of the Siena Metro are included in fact the pieve of St. John the Baptist, side by side the imposing staircase rising to the so-called “new Duomo”. The church was built in the first half of the 14th century but is remembered because it contains at least one extraordinary work of the early Renaissance, the famous Baptismal Source. The golden bronze molds, with Stories of St. John the Baptist, were conceived by artists such as Jacopo della Quercia, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Donatello. In the Baptistery there is also the largest religious cycle of the Sienese Renaissance depicting the Articles of the Creed, a rather unusual theme in Italian painting, which however knows in this city wide spread.

Torre del Mangia is located in Piazza del Campo in Siena; is the civic tower of the Municipal Palace. It is among the tallest ancient Italian towers (the third, after the 112 meters tall Cremona Tower, and the Tower of the Asinelli of Bologna 97.2 meters high), reaching 88 meters above the last merlons. According to Ranuccio Bianchi Bandinelli, Torre del Mangia, though starting from a lower ground, reaches the same height as the bell tower of the Duomo of Siena, which symbolizes the achieved balance between heavenly and earthly power, without neither of them overcomes and strives to the other.
